Nutritional Evaluation

The basis of an effective nutritional treatment program is a comprehensive evaluation, driven by two questions:

1) What is going on in my body?

2) Why are these things occurring?

1) What is going on in my body?

This question is answered by history, examination, and testing. Testing may include:

  • Blood, urine, stool and other analyses
  • Hair analysis for toxic metal/mineral contamination
  • Body composition analysis
  • Other specialized tests

These tests and measurements help us to understand what your nutrition may be doing to your body.

2) Why are these things occurring?

This question is addressed with a comprehensive dietary analysis. This analysis compares food intake to food chemical content for 150 different factors allowing us an understanding of total diet content. This tells us what you eat that is determining the condition and health of your body, and is done by having you keep a detailed diary of everything eaten for a 3-5 day period. This information is then run through a software program that matches what you eat with the USDA database information on what the chemical/nutrient content of the food is. The result is a detailed breakdown of the amounts of all of the necessary food constituents you get such as vitamins and minerals as well as the amounts of things that may be causing trouble such as the ratio of saturated to polyunsaturated fats. This part is simply why things may have gone wrong.

From the understanding of what is occurring within your body and why that may be occurring from a nutritional perspective, an individualized treatment program is formulated.

Individual Nutritional Profiles

Each person is a unique interaction of their genetic profile and their environmental influences. As would be expected, a given disorder such as elevated blood cholesterol can originate from different combinations of factors in different people. Effective nutritional therapy must be unique to each individual.

The Goal of a Nutritional Evaluation

The goal is to identify any nutritional imbalances that may relate to current health concerns such as weight problems, cholesterol problems, hypertension and others, as well as to identify imbalances that may increase risk of future problems. The final product is a detailed plan for the correction of these imbalances with the ultimate goal of helping current and future health problems. This detailed plan is the framework for a nutritional treatment program.
